01 / THE GAME

Volleyball’s grit. Medicine-ball power. Playground joy.

A simple game that asks for your whole self.

Catch a weighted ball. Pass or throw it over an eight-foot net. Keep it off the ground. That’s the doorway—the game gets richer every time you step through it.

Catch

Receive with control. A diving save counts when you keep your body between the ball and the ground.

Connect

Use one pass to bring a teammate into the play—or send it straight back when the opening is yours.

Launch

Throw over the net. Place it, power it, or out-think the defense. Then reset and go again.

A White House workout became a national invitation.

Invented in 1929 for President Herbert Hoover, the game nearly disappeared. Almost a century later, a Phoenix men’s group picked up the medicine ball—and found something worth sharing.
